Important Announcement! Complete Clinical Hours Virtually

After more than a year of measuring and documenting outcomes to advocate for changes at the state level, THEARI is very pleased to announce the most recent news. Today the Colorado State Board of Nursing voted to advance Colorado as a state leader in improving and expanding clinical education for previously licensed nurses. As of December 30, 2021, nurses whose licenses have been inactive for 5-10* years may demonstrate competency through completion of 120 hours of theory and 120 hours of clinical, 100% of which may be conducted in a simulation environment.

*Nurses whose license has been inactive for more than 10 years may complete up to 75% of their requisite clinicals with simulation.

  • The RN Refresher course is based on and approved by the Colorado State Board of Nursing requirements for a non-traditional program.
  • Course is divided into modules and is self-paced, allowing you to set a schedule that works for you. You have a full year to complete the course!
  • Phase I includes didactic material and the NovEx virtual clinical simulation program to provide refresher students with “pre-hospital” practice scenarios.
  • Modules include additional learning activities and resources to complement the theory content.
  • Phase II comprises the clinical – program staff can assist you in finding a clinical site near you- no need to travel to downtown Denver. The precepted clinical is comprised of 120 hours of practice in a clinical setting. Clinical hours can be completed virtually, in-person, or a combination of both.

Not required to take the refresher course but want to refresh your skills?

Nurses in any state who aren't required to take the refresher course but would like to participate in a virtual simulation experience can sign up now. Strengthen your clinical skills in a safe setting from the comfort of your home. All you need is broadband internet and a modern browser!

Course Overview

You will have 12 months from when you received your logins to finish phase 1 and phase 2 of the course.

Online Programs Used:

Moodle: The Moodle Learning Management System hosts the Phase One, theory portion of the course. The course is designed to develop and strengthen critical thinking skills and the four modules include assigned readings, interactive case studies, additional resources, and self-tests.

 

NovEx: NovEx virtual simulation (v-sim) is an asynchronous online case-based learning experience. V-sim is integrated throughout the RN Refresher modules which allows students to practice and demonstrate required competencies and best practices required for re-licensure. NovEx V-Sim Scenario Example

 

Course modules include:

  • Module One - Current Concepts in Nursing Theory
  • Module Two - Therapeutic Advances
  • Module Three - Systems Review and Current Trends (includes NovEx v-sim)
  • Module Four - Contemporary Issues
  • Module Five - Clinical Practicum
Once you have completed the course requirements you will then be eligible to take the open book final exam, either online or at an approved proctoring site. You are required to pass the final exam with an 80% in order to continue to the clinical portion. You may take the final exam only once. Should you not pass, you would need to retake the course at half tuition before taking the final again and meet with the professional education manager to design a successful plan.

THEARI is not able to offer financial aid, however we offer a payment plan. When registering for the course choose the payment plan option.
Additionally, your local Workforce Center may be able to provide financial assistance if qualified. Visit your local agency for eligibility criteria.

After the Exam

After passing the exam, you will need to complete the following:

 

Colorado State Board of Nursing Fingerprint Background Check

Price determined by fingerprinting agency.

 

THEARI Drug Screen and Background Check (Only if participating in in-person clinicals)

Drug Screen Cost: $40.00

Background Check Cost: $40.00 minimum (varies based on student information)

NOTE: We do not accept any other background check or drug screens.

Proof of current TB test

Clinical Practicum

Module Five consists of 120 hours of clinical practicum. Skills training and site-specific training utilizing self-assessment and a skills check list must be completed under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor. The clinical experience is individualized for the student based on their background, education and work environment. The experience is a contract between the student, healthcare facility, and assigned preceptor. This practicum is arranged by the student. An Education Agreement between THEARI and the healthcare facility must be created before the experience begins. Also the State Board of Nursing (SBON) must assign a temporary nursing license for the practicum before beginning. The student must apply for a permanent license to the SBON at this time as well. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) website has more information about these requirements.
  • 5+ years expired/inactive - Contact Hours: 120 Theory and 120 Clinical*

*The State Board of Nursing may require additional hours as determined by the Board on a case-by-case basis.
